A humming disposal that won’t turn is almost always jammed. Something is stuck between the impellers and the grind ring, and the motor can’t rotate. Turn it off before it overheats. Sometimes it’s a simple jam we can clear quickly; other times the motor has failed and the unit needs replacing. Never put your hand in the disposal. Call us and we’ll free it safely or replace it if it’s worn out.
Most garbage disposal replacements run about $250 to $550 installed, depending on the horsepower and quality of the unit you choose. A basic model is on the low end, while a powerful, quieter unit costs more. If the wiring, mounting, or drain needs work, that can add a little. We give you a firm, upfront price before we start, and our current offers may help with a new disposal installation.
Horsepower is the main factor. A 1/3 or 1/2 HP unit works for light use, but most households are happier with a 3/4 or 1 HP disposal. More power means fewer jams, quieter operation, and the ability to handle tougher scraps. If your current unit jams a lot, upgrading the horsepower usually solves it. We’ll recommend the right size for how your household cooks and cleans up.
Leaks usually come from one of a few spots: the mounting ring seal at the sink flange, the connection to the dishwasher or drain, or a crack in the disposal body itself. Seal and connection leaks can often be repaired, but a cracked housing means the unit needs replacing. We’ll find the source and tell you honestly whether a repair or a new unit is the better value.
Usually, yes. A disposal replacement is a straightforward job for our plumbers and is typically completed in a single visit, often the same day you call. We’ll bring the right unit, install it cleanly, connect the drain and dishwasher correctly, and leak-test it before we leave so you can use it right away.
To avoid jams and clogs, keep out fibrous foods (celery, corn husks, onion skins), starchy items (potato peels, pasta, rice), grease and oil, coffee grounds, bones, and anything non-food. Run cold water while you grind and for a few seconds after. These habits, along with choosing enough horsepower, help a disposal run reliably for years. If yours clogs often anyway, it may be underpowered or failing.
