Signs You Have a Sewer Line Problem

Sewer trouble rarely fixes itself — and a small issue can become a messy backup. If you notice any of these, it’s worth a camera inspection before it gets worse.

Multiple Drains Backing Up

When several fixtures back up at once, the main sewer line is the likely cause.

Sewage Odors

A persistent sewage smell inside or in the yard points to a line problem.

Gurgling Toilets

Gurgling or bubbling when you flush or drain signals a main-line blockage.

Slow Whole-House Drainage

If every drain is slow, the issue is downstream in the sewer line.

Soggy or Sunken Yard Spots

Wet patches or a lush green stripe over the line can mean a leak or break.

Frequent Backups

Clogs that keep returning usually mean roots or a damaged pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Know About Sewer Line Service

How do you find out what’s wrong with my sewer line?
We run a specialized waterproof camera down the line, usually through a cleanout, and watch a live monitor as it travels. That shows us exactly what the problem is — roots, grease, a belly, a crack, or a full break — and precisely where it is. Pinpointing the location and cause up front means we recommend the right fix the first time and can often avoid unnecessary digging. We’ll show you the footage too.
What is trenchless sewer repair?
Trenchless repair fixes a damaged sewer line with little or no digging. The most common method, pipe lining, inserts a resin-saturated liner into the old pipe and cures it in place to form a new pipe within the old one. It spares your lawn, driveway, and landscaping compared to traditional excavation. Not every situation is a candidate — a fully collapsed line may need excavation — but we’ll tell you honestly whether trenchless is an option for your line.
How much does sewer line repair cost?
It varies widely with the problem and method. Clearing a clog or cutting roots is on the lower end; a spot repair or trenchless lining is in the middle; and a full excavation and replacement of a collapsed line is the most involved. Because a camera inspection tells us exactly what’s needed, we can give you a firm, itemized price before any work starts — and often more than one option to choose from.
Why do tree roots keep clogging my sewer line?
Roots are drawn to the moisture and nutrients inside sewer pipes and work their way in through joints and small cracks — especially in older clay or cast-iron lines. Once inside, they catch debris and cause repeat backups. We can cut and clear the roots to restore flow, but for a permanent fix we may recommend lining or replacing the affected section so the roots can’t return.
Can you clear a sewer backup the same day?
Yes. We prioritize sewer backups because they can’t wait, and we carry the equipment to clear most blockages on the first visit. Once the line is flowing again, we’ll typically run a camera to confirm it’s clear and identify whether an underlying issue needs a longer-term fix so you’re not calling us back for the same problem.
Who is responsible for the sewer line — me or the city?
In most cases, the homeowner owns and is responsible for the sewer lateral that runs from the house to the connection at the city main, while the city maintains the main itself. That means a clog or break in your lateral is usually your responsibility. We can inspect the full length of your lateral, show you where the problem is, and help you understand where responsibility shifts to the municipality.
